Marie Joséphine Besnard was born on August 15, 1896.
She was accused of serial murder on July 21, 1949. After three trials, lasting better than ten years, Besnard was finally freed in 1954, acquitted on December 12, 1961. The case attracted widespread attention throughout the country and remains one of the most enigmatic in modern French legal history.
Eleven years after being arrested, Marie Besnard was found not guilty on all 13 counts of murder on December 12, 1961.
She died a free woman on February 14,1980.
