At Ballard High School during a drive-by shooting, 16-year-old Melissa Fernandez was fatally shot and a 16-year-old male student received minor injuries. The shooting was believed to be gang-related. Later in the year, police arrested Brian Ronquillo, 16, and Cesar Sarausad, 19, for the shooting. Brian, who was the trigger man was convicted of first degree murder and was sentenced to 52 years in prison and Cesar, who drove the car was convicted of second degree murder and was sentenced to more than 27 years in prison.
