Execution Date For Timothy L. Coleman
The Ohio Supreme Court set an execution date for Timothy L. Coleman. Coleman was convicted of killing Melinda Stevens, a police informant, on January 2, 1996, in order to keep her from testifying against him in a drug case.
On the night of January 2, 1996, Melinda Stevens was shot to death in an alley behind Riddle’s Ribs in Springfield, Ohio. Timothy Coleman is the man who perpetrated that crime.
During the previous summer, Melinda Stevens had worked as a confidential informant for the Springfield, Ohio police department and made controlled purchases of drugs from suspected drug dealers. On three separate occasions she had made purchases of crack cocaine from Timothy Coleman. These purchases were observed and, as a result, a grand jury indicted Coleman in September 1995 for aggravated trafficking in cocaine and associated possession offenses.
Coleman pled not guilty to these charges and while awaiting trial for the charges, he told his cellmate, James R. White, that he had discovered that Melinda Stevens was the one that gotten him busted and he intended to take care of her. Coleman was released on October 12.
On January 3, after Melinda Stevens had been killed, Timothy Coleman told White, who had also been released from jail, that he took care of his business, meaning Melinda Stevens.
Around 7:25 p.m. on January 2, 1996, police and paramedics responded to an alley behind West Pleasant Street near Riddle’s Ribs, the scene of a shots-fired report. They found Melinda Stevens lying face up with no pulse or respiration and only minimal heart activity. Although the paramedics took Stevens to the hospital, the coroner later concluded that Stevens had died at 7:20 p.m..
Timothy Coleman was indicted in March of 1996 for the aggravated murder of Melinda Stevens with prior calculation and design. Coleman was found guilty on all charges. Following the penalty phase hearing, the jury recommended the death penalty and Coleman was sentenced to death.
The court scheduled an execution date for Timothy L. Coleman for October 30, 2025.
