That rupture never quite sealed; it simply became part of the wallpaper of his early years.

Uniform, Disgrace, Drift

Rhoades enlisted in the Marine Corps after graduation. The promise of order didn’t hold. He was dishonorably discharged for involvement in a robbery, tried college and quit, then even knocked on the door of law enforcement – only to be turned away because of the discharge. He married three times, had a son with his first wife, and pinballed through jobs in stores, warehouses, and restaurants before he found the road that would define him: long-haul trucking.

The Road and the Rig

By the 1980s, Rhoades was spending more time in his cab than in any living room. He outfitted the sleeper not as a refuge, but as a cage: restraints anchored overhead, gear tucked away where only he could reach it. He moved through the BDSM scene and, behind closed doors, turned cruelty into a routine – abuse that third-party accounts later said bled into his marriage.

In 1989, Patricia “Candace” Walsh and Douglas Scott Zyskowski left Seattle with their thumbs out and a map of highways ahead.
