Classification & Characteristics
An intimate-partner double murderer, Thompson’s crimes align with patterns of possessive control and retaliatory violence after a relationship ends. The targets – his former partner and her new companion-reflect jealousy and entitlement; the swift, direct attack suggests escalation rather than anonymity, with proximity to the victims and prior intimacy reducing the barriers to lethal force.
He is best known for his audacious 2005 escape: walking out of the Harris County Jail by social-engineering a forged “Attorney General” ID, then surviving briefly through improvisation before being recaptured intoxicated at a Shreveport liquor-store pay phone. The episode cemented his notoriety -framing him as a manipulator willing to exploit institutional gaps – while later media profiles amplified the image of a calculated flight undone by impulsivity.
Case Summary
On April 30, 1998, after his relationship with Glenda Dennise Hayslip had ended and she began seeing Darren Keith Cain, Thompson confronted them and shot both, killing Cain and fatally wounding Hayslip. A Harris County jury convicted him of capital murder in 1999. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals later upheld the conviction but ordered a new punishment phase; in 2005, a second jury again returned a death sentence. Supreme Court

The Story
The night before April 30, 1998, officers were called to a north Harris County apartment and escorted Charles Victor Thompson away after a dispute. Hours later, he returned. He kicked the door in just after dawn, stepping back into the same small rooms where tempers had already frayed and where his former relationship with Glenda Dennise Hayslip had ended.
Inside, Thompson confronted Hayslip and her new boyfriend, Darren Keith Cain. An argument flared and broke into gunfire. Cain was shot multiple times and died at the scene. Hayslip was shot in the face, airlifted by Life Flight, and kept alive for a time on hospital machines; she succumbed to her injuries about a week later.
A Harris County jury convicted Thompson of capital murder in 1999. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals later upheld the conviction but sent the case back for a new punishment phase; in 2005, a second jury again returned a death sentence.
The Escape of Charles Victor Thompson
While back in Houston for the 2005 re-sentencing, Thompson obtained civilian clothes and a forged ID badge, claimed affiliation with the Attorney General’s office, and walked out of the Harris County Jail – an exit aided by multiple personnel errors. He was located three to four days later in Shreveport, Louisiana, intoxicated, talking on a pay phone outside a liquor store. In interviews, officials said he had posed as a Hurricane Katrina evacuee to get food, clothing and cash. CBS News+2CBS News+2
